The most important role of every church board is to protect the interests of the owner.  Pastors and Board members, you are not the owner. God is. You are stewards of His resources. As a Leadership Board, you need to work together, with a Heavenly focus, to demonstrate God’s love both spiritually and organizationally to your people.

Your Leadership Board has many roles, but these six are critical:

Demonstrate quality spiritual Servant Leadership to your congregation.

Focus on the big picture, praying and planning for God’s direction.

Provide encouragement and accountability to your lead Pastor.

Ensure God’s Vision, Mission and Values are foremost in your decision making.

Encourage your Pastor on strategic decisions affecting the staff and future of the church.

Ensure a balanced budget and find solutions for the challenges your people face.

“To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder and a witness of Christ’s sufferings who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, watching over them—not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not pursuing dishonest gain, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock. And when the Chief Shepherd appears, you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.” (1 Peter 5:1-4 NIV)

Pastors, leaders, does this describe your leadership team?  If not, put it on your next agenda.

Yours in Service,

Laurie D. Kennedy
