Laurie KennedyI’ve had the privilege of interviewing hundreds of Pastors, some in the application or transition role, others in coaching and still others in challenging circumstances. A key question we ask of Pastors is to talk about their Calling to Ministry. Many will restate a specific time and place where God laid the need and responsibility on their heart. Others, describe a careful and growing belief that God had Called them to a particular Ministry.

Brad Lomenick defines Calling as, “God’s personal invitation for me to work on His agenda, using the talents I’ve been given in ways that are eternally significant.” (Brad Lomenick, The Catalyst Leader)

God called Noah to build an Ark and save his family. Caleb and Joshua were Called to carry God’s Vision of the Promised Land. Nehemiah was called to build a wall and bring revival to his people. Paul’s Calling totally changed his career to be a Missionary and plant churches.

“Our sense of Calling should be like an unfolding epic adventure.” (Christine Caine Cofounder of A21 Campaign)

I’ve been concerned, maybe even convicted and challenged why we don’t put the Calling question to Leaders other than just Pastors. Doesn’t it make sense that a Board Chair, Elder, Deacon or other lay volunteer be Called? We believe that God had a plan before we were born. He gave us the Spiritual Gifts, skills and abilities that we need. God has a plan and we were designed to fit within it.

“For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. Your eyes saw my unformed body;” (Psalm 139:13-16 NIV)

Think about it? What if we taught our next generation of leaders to pray about, look for and anticipate the spiritual gifts, talents and abilities God gives us to accomplish His purpose?

Leadership is … knowing that God has a plan that includes a Vision, Mission and Values that He has Called you to.
