Laurie KennedyAn effective Board is like a magnifying glass. By focusing the power of the sun, the magnifying glass dramatically increases its influence. Similarly, the effective Leadership Board will accomplish far more by focusing on a process of continual improvement.

Church Boards are living organisms. They lead the Vision, Mission and Values while their individual personalities influence performance. These factors need to work together for God’s glory. Your church cannot be led over the long run without monitoring performance and since any organizational change must start at the top, the Leadership Board needs to monitor their own performance.

These 9 questions should be asked after every Board meeting.

  1. Do our Board members demonstrate commitment to the Church Vision, Mission and Values and have the necessary skill and experience?
  2. Does the Board monitor results, seeking a balance between ensuring quality, cost effective programs and the staff’s responsibility to creatively initiate and develop?
  3. Do Board members actively share positive and negative input?
  4. Are all church programs in alignment; leading to the Vision of the church?
  5. Do meeting agendas focus on issues of strategic policy, with decisions based on good information with positive dialogue?
  6. Do Board decisions support the staff and volunteers who lead programs giving clear direction and support, allowing them to work without further interference?
  7. Do Board members demonstrate God’s love to the community, and are they the eyes and ears of the church?
  8. Are our Board members effective prayer warriors for the Ministry staff and church?
  9. Is our Agenda focused on, ‘keeping the main thing the main thing’ driving us toward our desired future?

Leaders, “Now it’s up to you. Be on your toes—both for yourselves and your congregation of sheep. The Holy Spirit has put you in charge of these people—God’s people they are—to guard and protect them. God himself thought they were worth dying for.” Acts 20:28 (MSG)

Leadership is a continual process of monitoring our lives, decisions and activities leading to God’s glory.
