John Pellowe from the Laurie KennedyCanadian Council of Christian Charities confirms, “The solution is for every church board to develop an orientation program for prospective board members.  Before accepting a nomination a prospective board member should understand the type of Board they will be joining and what they must do to be a good board member.  Ongoing board development should be a priority.” (Faith Today)

The most important role of every church board is to protect the interests of the owner.  Pastors and Board members, you are not the owners. God is. You are stewards of His resource. Your Leadership Board has many roles, but these represent the most important:

  • Demonstrate quality spiritual Servant Leadership to the congregation
  • Focus on the big picture, praying and planning for what should happen in the future
  • Provide encouragement and accountability to the Lead Pastor
  • Maintain responsibility for and ensuring the Vision, Mission and Values of the church are in the forefront of the people and integrated into the Strategic Plan.
  • Encourage the Pastor on strategic decisions affecting the staff and future of the church.
  • Ensure balanced budget
  • Optimistically find solutions for the challenges and life changing decisions of the people

“To the elders among you, I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ’s sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed; Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers-not because you must, but because you are willing, as God wants you to be; not greedy for money, but eager to serve; not lording it over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.  And when the Chief Shepherd appears you will receive the crown of glory that will never fade away.” (1 Peter 5:1-7 NIV)

Pastors, leaders, does this describe your leadership team?  If so, forward this note to them as a form of encouragement. If it doesn’t describe your Board, consider putting it as an agenda item for your next meeting.

Leadership is a board, demonstrating Servant Leadership to the entire church.
