A father and his young son are on a summer walk. They pass trees, flowers and follow a long path beside a deep river valley. It is beautiful and relaxed. As time passes the path leads to a suspension bridge over a deep gulch and the river far below.

Imagine two concrete vertical pillars with steel cables connecting to a horizontal walking platform with railings that swayed in the wind.

The boy hesitates ahead of the bridge while looking at the raging waters far below. The steep valley and distance capture his total being.

The wise father (leader) tells his son to watch while he takes the lead and steps unto the swaying, suspension bridge himself. The father steps out and asks his son (protégé) to follow. The boy hesitantly follows still looking down at the raging river. At the half way mark the father (leader) asks his son (follower) if he would like to lead the rest of the way across the slightly moving suspension bridge. The father and son finish the bridge and a leader is born. Wow!

What’s the learning?

Every new leader needs to feel confident and secure with the experienced leader. The new project or assignment needs to be worth the challenge. Realizing the organizational or potential benefit or risk the leader must demonstrate confidence. The goal or accomplishment must be seen to be worth the risk

Moses demonstrated leadership to Joshua. Paul led Timothy. Christ mentored his disciples daily. Who are you leading?

You then, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.” (2 Timothy 2:1-2 NIV)

Leadership is … trust, care and teach.
