Laurie KennedyThe word ‘business’ in the King James version is fascinating. Christ as a 12 year old was in the temple interacting with the leaders of His day.  His response to his worried parents was, “to be about my Father’s business” (Luke 2:49 KJV).  Also, note Christ’s direction (Romans 12:11 KJV) leaders should, “Not (be) slothful in business, fervent in spirit, serving the Lord.”
At your local church, who is in charge of God’s business? Is it the Board? What is the role of a Leadership Board with responsibility for the church? At your next Board meeting, keep the following points in mind.
Board members:

  • Protect the interests of the owner, (God).
  • Provide Servant Leadership to the church, not their own interests.
  • Are responsible to discover God’s Vision for the church.
  • Lead the people and the church into God’s great plan
  • Work in harmony with the Vision and Values of the church
  • Pray for the Board and for the church on a regular basis.
  • Inspire confidence in God, not in themselves
  • Earn respect for their Servant Leadership, not for their position.
  • Are accountable to God, each other and their people
  • Monitor their own performance and the church continually.
  • Keep their eyes on the road ahead, not the rearview mirror.
  • Delegate details to staff while they pray and prepare for the future.
  • Meet challenging scriptural and organizational requirements
  • Participate in individual and team related training
  • Challenge high risk responsibilities with scripture and prayer
  • Ensure high personal standards
  • Aim to achieve scriptural results

Effective Board members follow the advice in 1 Peter 4:5 (NIV), “to the elders among you. I appeal as a fellow elder, a witness of Christ’s sufferings and one who also will share in the glory to be revealed: Be shepherds of God’s flock that is under your care, serving as overseers-not because you must, but because you are willing.”
Leadership is leading your church into a God directed yet uncertain future.
