Laurie KennedyDomino leadership is a ‘tongue in cheek’ leadership lesson. It is simplistic, unique and a powerful learning opportunity.

Remember the first time you stood two dominos on end, and then knocked them over. That sound and feeling is remembered forever. The thrill of accomplishment, the immediate result and the knowledge that you did it yourself is the start of something bigger.

You didn’t stop there. If two dominos can be felled by a touch, then the thrill must be greater if five or six are in line. Your pulse quickens another touch and more dominoes fall, with the sound remembered by budding leaders. You have now defined a task, stretched your skill and watched the goal accomplished.

As experience increases, the thrill of ten is only out done by twenty dominoes falling in sequence. First one line and then the other. Each domino relies on the success and experience of the previous one moving the challenge to higher and higher levels of accomplishment. The Vision is always ahead.

The ultimate? A table of dominos. A variety of designs, a flower, a wheel with spokes and a couple of strings where the dominoes fall in opposite directions simultaneously. Then a jump. The pressure of one domino propels another over a cascading line initiating another new pattern. Wow! It would take planning, a lot of dominos, teamwork and dedication, but one step at time, it will be accomplished.

Domino leadership is utilizing and building on the skill and experience of your team. The only thing holding you back is the courage to dream and the will to put effort into the task. Each positive step towards your Vision leads to another. A small success, a favorable comment, a thank you note and volunteers excitedly working together.

Leadership is teamwork with every successful accomplishment leading to another.
