The integrity challenges of business, politics and sports leaders frequent our News and coffee break discussions. Note these key words taken from Daily and National Headlines.
Securities and accounting fraud, conspiracy, personal loans from company accounts, misappropriating corporate funds, tax fraud, tax evasion, conspiracy, misrepresenting financial results, falsifying documents, accounting irregularities, embezzlement, hiding money to bribe officials, insider training, securities violations, conspiracy, wire fraud, inaccurate expense reports, inappropriate relationships, personal misconduct and inappropriate behavior, lying under oath and lying about performance enhancing drugs.
The character traits of the leader form the culture and the public opinion of the organization.
“Leaders Need Integrity and must Walk the talk. That is what integrity really is all about. At the heart of integrity is being consistent, honest, moral, and trustworthy. Leaders with integrity are consistent in the face of adversity, show consistency in their words and actions, and are unfailing with who they are and what they stand for” (Palanski & Yammarino, 2007).
Leaders with integrity:
- Are transparent in their actions and decisions.
- Demonstrate complete honesty
- Are authentic.
- Speak the truth.
- Are genuine and sincere
- Take responsibility for their decisions
- Are accountable
Scripture confirms God’s plan for leaders.
“Patrol Jerusalem’s streets. Look around. Take note. Search the market squares. See if you can find one man, one woman, a single soul who does what is right and tries to live a true life. I want to forgive that person.” (Jeremiah 5:1-2, MSG)
“…your kingdom will not endure; the Lord has sought out a man after his own heart and appointed him ruler of his people, because you have not kept the Lord’s command.” (1 Samuel 13:14 NIV)
Leadership is…, living a life of Integrity, followers don’t follow your skills, they follow you.
